What is Biblical Counseling?
After much research into Christian counseling methods and philosophies, along with much prayer and seeking the Lord’s guidance and wisdom, He has led us through His Word and through some other ministries to Biblical Counseling. Biblical Counseling does not counsel on “issues.” Most counseling wastes so much time traveling thousands of miles down endless roads that usually wind in circles searching for the “root” of the person’s problem. Whereas, Biblical Counseling leads a troubled person through a Scriptural system that covers the main “root problems” of all “issues.” If all the roots are properly dealt with first, the issues tend to go away. Then we continue with the process of renewing the mind: identifying wrong thinking, rejecting lies, and replacing them with truth. Biblical Principles are powerful when they are obeyed and applied. Symptoms are only the outward manifestations of inward problems and only by eliminating the root causes can true and lasting healing come.
We have developed a counseling guide on Biblical Principles which covers the main root problems that are common to all emotional problems. We have found that many experts agree; emotional problems all seem to stem from one or more of these main roots. We deal with the roots, not “issues” in counseling. When you take care of the roots first, the issues seem to take care of themselves. Then a healthy root system can be developed, being firmly “rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith,…” (Colossians 2:7), with roots of freedom, forgiveness, humility, submission, and a belief system based on the truth of God’s Word.
God then led us to put the materials into a handbook form with notes to the Counselor and step-by-step instructions of exactly what to do and what to say as you lead a person through it. That made it very trainable. Anyone could be trained to lead a person through the counseling materials by just following the handbook. The Counselee gets their own binder too and everything we cover with them is given to them in the form of handouts so that by the time they are done they have their own complete Counselee Handbook. That way they don’t lose or forget anything. It is all right there for them. We are not just taking them through these principles to apply one time. We are teaching them how to implement these principles into their lives from that point on. This is what brings about lasting change.
